Do numbers define success?

“Peace of mind is a luxury, money cannot buy”

What does being successful mean? As per google being successful means having achieved fame, wealth or social status. But do these subjective words actually define being successful?

Do numbers in form of marks, the amount of money in our bank account actually define our success?

We grow up listening to stuff like “ if you don’t score good, you won’t be able to succeed in life.” Or “if you don’t score atleast 90 percent you won’t be accounted as a bright student.”

Being an average scoring student, I always thought is it just good marks I want or something else? Something which would give me happiness and would make me feel content. The thought changed my perspective towards success and that’s exactly why I stopped connecting good marks with being successful. Also, as I grew up I stopped defining people as successful with the amount of money they have in their bank account. And when I say these two points I don’t mean that I don’t appreciate the effort put in by people who score 90 per cent or above or have a lot of money in their bank account, i just believe in the fact that you cannot define a person success through these numbers.

My definition of success would be – “A person, no matter, how rich or poor, started from scratch, irrespective of the amount of money and what kind of education one has received has been able to fulfil his/her dreams. A person is successful if she /he doesn’t let the marks, money and the power he/she holds get into ones head. A person is successful if he/she respects people irrespective of the other person stature. “

I have few example here where people succeeded in life purely because of the passion they followed

– A senior in college who pursued his passion for arts and now paints the town red with his creativity

– A friend who turned his love for food into something big that today people call him by the name of “food critic in town”

– A beautiful lady, just like my mother, who defied all odds, followed her passion for healthy and a fit lifestyle and started her own business

– A person who has property worth lakhs changed the course of his life to just serve the poor.

– An actor who did not even complete her education but blows your mind away with her acting skills

I read this somewhere, “I might earn a little less, but at the end of the day when I come back home, I feel happy about the work I did”

A kid who is passionate about football would be more happy if he is the person behind the winning goal rather than scoring a 10/10 in his maths exam.

Financial security is always important but at what cost it comes, one might think. If it comes at the cost of giving up on your passion, and losing yourself, pushing someone down, you might be successful but you won’t actually know what real success tastes like.

Success should be defined by one’s heart and mind, and not by the subjective definition stated by the world. Let numbers define success only when you are shedding those extra kilos!!! 😜
